Janet's Foss waterfall

The walk to Janet's Foss takes about twenty minutes from Malham village, and it's one of those Yorkshire waterfall trips that actually delivers. You're threading through a limestone gorge with the beck below you, proper green and moss-covered, and then suddenly you're looking at the waterfall itself - a neat little cascade dropping into a pool that's deep enough for a swim if you're brave and it's summer.

Locally it's got some folklore attached - Janet was supposedly a witch who lived in the cave behind the falls, which adds a bit of theatre to what's already a scenic spot. The pool is genuinely lovely, the limestone creates these natural terraces, and the whole gorge has that dramatic Dales feel without needing to hike for hours.

It works well for families because the walk is short and not technical, though it can be muddy after rain and the path gets narrow in places. History buffs and photographers do well here too - the geology's interesting and the light hits the water nicely in late afternoon. Allow an hour round trip, maybe longer if you picnic by the pool.
