Janet's Foss

A waterfall that disappears behind its own curtain of water - that's the magic of Janet's Foss, just outside Malham in the Yorkshire Dales. The walk to reach it from Malham village takes about twenty minutes through proper limestone country, past dry stone walls and across fields that belong in a calendar. The foss itself sits in a horseshoe of rock, with water dropping about fifteen metres into a clear pool. Behind the falls, there's a cave - folklore has it a local witch called Janet lived in there, though honestly it's more of an alcove than a secret lair.

It's a cracking spot for families because the walk isn't strenuous and the payoff is immediate. Kids will spend a good hour splashing in the shallows and exploring the rocks, though the water's cold year-round. If you're not a paddle person, the limestone formations alone are worth the trip - pale grey and weathered into shapes that catch the light beautifully, especially in late afternoon.

You'll want to allow a full morning or afternoon for this as part of a wider Malham exploration. Combine it with a walk up to Malham Cove or along to Gordale Scar and you've got a proper day out. Go early if it's summer - the car park fills quickly by midday.
