It's a Cracker

The cave system at It's a Cracker near Carnforth is genuinely worth the detour if you're the type who gets excited by geological formations and a bit of pottering about underground. We spent a good hour working our way through the passages - some tight, some more spacious - examining the limestone walls and getting that satisfying sense of being properly off the beaten track.

It's best suited to walkers and geology enthusiasts rather than young children, mainly because there's a fair bit of scrambling involved and the passages can feel claustrophobic. You'll want proper footwear and a torch, even in summer. The narrow sections demand a certain level of fitness, though nothing extreme.

We found it worked brilliantly as part of a broader wandering day around the moorland above Carnforth rather than as a destination in itself. You could easily combine it with a stomp across the hills or a visit to nearby attractions in the area. The experience feels genuinely exploratory - there's no touristy infrastructure, which is either refreshing or frustrating depending on your temperament.

If you're staying at Primrose Glamping Pods or Philpin Farm Campsite, both within a few miles, this makes an excellent half-day venture. Just go prepared, don't expect signposting, and bring someone who enjoys a bit of underground adventuring. It's the kind of place that appeals to a specific crowd rather than everyone.
