Island Mere

The water at Island Mere sits dark and still, ringed by reeds and low Suffolk woodland that feels properly isolated despite being barely a mile from Saxmundham. It's a shallow lake - more of a mere, as the name suggests - with a small island in the middle that gives the place its character, though you won't be crossing to it. What you get here is a quiet spot for watching wildlife, particularly birds, which is really why people come. Birdwatchers will spend hours scanning the water for bitterns, marsh harriers, and winter wildfowl. Casual visitors might feel a bit underwhelmed after twenty minutes, to be honest.

There's a walking path that loops around the edge, flat and manageable for families with younger kids, though the undergrowth can get thick and muddy in winter. Bring binoculars if you're serious about spotting anything. The whole circuit takes maybe 45 minutes at a gentle pace.

It's free to visit and works well as a morning outing from any of the nearby caravan parks - Cliff House is only a mile and a half away, while Carlton Meres is just over six miles off if you're staying further afield. The heath and farmland around here is characteristic Suffolk, and Island Mere slots nicely into a broader walking day if you're exploring the area rather than making it your sole destination. Go early for the best chance of seeing birds, and expect to share the space with proper twitchers during migration season.
