Dunwich Forest

The forest sprawls across the Suffolk coast like something half-forgotten, and that's rather the point. Dunwich Forest sits east of Saxmundham, a dense woodland that feels genuinely wild - the kind of place where you can lose an afternoon without seeing another soul. It's a proper walk destination, not a quick car park-and-stroll affair. The trees press in close, the paths wind through dense undergrowth, and on damp days the whole thing has an atmospheric quality that's distinctly English in the best way.

This is walker territory. Families with young kids might find it a bit relentless - there's no playground, no cafe, no visitor infrastructure. What you get is woodland, birdsong, and the occasional glimpse of heathland clearing. Bring boots. The ground stays boggy even weeks after rain. Allow two to three hours for a proper circuit, though you can do shorter loops depending on energy levels.

It works well as a morning detour if you're based at one of the nearby caravan sites - Cliff House Holiday Park is just 1.6 miles away, or Haw Wood Farm if you fancy something slightly further out. Combine it with a coastal walk or a visit to Saxmundham's market town feel for a full day. The forest doesn't have the manicured appeal of some managed woodlands, which is exactly why it's worth the visit. Real landscape beats polished attractions every time.
