Isabella's Mount

Standing stones and earthworks mark this Bronze Age burial site, perched on a hill overlooking the Northumberland countryside. The circular mound, roughly 30 metres across, offers commanding views towards the coast and makes for a proper windswept walk from Belford village below.

Archaeology enthusiasts will appreciate the well-preserved remains, though there's not much interpretive signage to explain what you're looking at. The site gets its romantic name from local legend, though it predates any medieval Isabellas by a few thousand years. It's essentially a large burial cairn with some associated standing stones - impressive in its lonely setting but hardly spectacular.

Families with older children who don't mind a bit of a hike will find it rewarding, particularly on clear days when you can see across to the Farne Islands. Younger ones might get restless after ten minutes of looking at ancient stones. The walk up from the village takes about 20 minutes through farmland.

It pairs well with a holiday at nearby Bamburgh Under Canvas or Glororum Holiday Park, both within easy driving distance of Belford. You could easily combine it with a trip to Bamburgh Castle on the coast - the contrast between the modest Bronze Age remains and that spectacular medieval fortress makes for an interesting day exploring different eras of Northumberland's past.
