Hudson Park

A proper Lancashire nature reserve, Hudson Park sits just outside Garstang and offers exactly what you'd hope for - woodland trails, open grassland, and decent birdwatching if you arrive early enough to catch the dawn chorus. The reserve itself isn't massive, so you're looking at a pleasant hour-long wander rather than an all-day mission. There are wetland areas that attract lapwing and snipe in winter, and the paths are well-maintained enough that you won't need proper hiking boots.

It's the sort of place that works well for families with kids old enough to walk without constant complaining - say seven upwards. Serious twitchers might find it a bit limited, but casual nature lovers will get a kick out of spotting woodpeckers or the odd buzzard overhead. The proximity to Garstang means you're not stuck for a decent lunch afterwards either.

If you're staying at Gibsons Barn or Orchard Glamping just down the road, Hudson Park makes a brilliant morning activity before heading elsewhere. Claylands and North View are also close enough that you could slot it into your itinerary without any bother. Admission appears to be free, which is always a bonus. Best visited in spring or autumn when the migrating birds pass through - summer can feel a touch quiet, and winter is wet underfoot unless you don't mind mud getting properly caked on your trainers.
