Howebanks Wood

The woodland around Howebanks, just outside Ambleside, is proper Lake District - steep sided valley, ancient trees, and the sort of quiet that makes you remember why you came to Cumbria in the first place. This is a working forest rather than a manicured attraction, which means no entrance fees, no visitor centre, and no crowds clogging up the paths on a Saturday afternoon.

What you get is straightforward woodland walking. The trees here are mixed - oak, ash, birch - and in autumn the colour is genuinely worth the trip. The terrain's moderate but it can get boggy underfoot after rain, so proper boots matter. You're looking at anywhere from 30 minutes pottering about to a couple of hours if you link it to a longer valley walk.

This works best for walkers who want something genuine rather than polished. If your kids are the type that'll happily splash through streams and climb over fallen logs, they'll love it. Younger children might find it a bit samey after a while - there's no lake views or dramatic peaks to aim for, just good woodland.

It sits perfectly with a stay at BaysBrown Farm Campsite just down the road, or any of the Great Langdale sites if you're basing yourself there. Ambleside's close enough for supplies and lunch if needed. The beauty of Howebanks is that it costs nothing and demands nothing - you turn up, walk, and vanish into the trees.
