The flooded gravel pits at Hoveringham have been transformed into something genuinely worth stopping for - a working nature reserve that actually feels alive rather than managed into sterility. You'll find it just outside Nottingham, between the Trent and the village itself, and it's the sort of place that rewards patience more than quick visits.

Walkers and birdwatchers will get the most from it. The water attracts serious numbers of wildfowl, particularly in winter and during migration seasons, so if you're into spotting something unusual with binoculars, arrive early when it's quietest. The walk itself is straightforward - you're on accessible paths around the lake edge, no scrambling required - though the ground can be boggy after rain. Allow a solid hour minimum, two if you're genuinely keen.
