About Royal Air Force Newton - 1940 to 2001

The airfield at Newton, just outside Nottingham, saw some of the Second World War's most intense action. From 1940 onwards, RAF Newton was home to squadrons flying Avro Lancasters and other heavies - the sort of aircraft that changed the course of the war. Walking the perimeter now, you can still trace the old runways and spot the scattered remains of hangars and operational buildings. It's a sobering place. The site closed in 2001, but enough survives to give you a proper sense of what wartime operations looked like on the ground - the scale of it, the concrete, the sheer industrial effort required. This isn't a museum with interactive exhibits. There are no gift shops or refreshment facilities that I'm aware of. What you get is the landscape itself, and that's often more powerful anyway. History enthusiasts and aviation buffs will spend a couple of hours here comfortably, picking over the buildings and imagining the roar of engines warming up before dawn raids. Families with younger kids might find it less gripping - there's not much hands-on here, just the walking and the thinking. If you're staying at one of the nearby parks - Gunthorpe Camping is closest at a mile and a half away - it's a solid half-day outing to pair with a trip into Nottingham itself. Go when the light's good and the weather's dry. The ground gets boggy. Check locally before you visit, as access and opening arrangements aren't always straightforward.
