Hortonber Hill

The walk up Hortonber Hill isn't long, but it's steep enough to remind your legs why you came. From Clitheroe, it's barely twenty minutes to the summit, and the payoff is proper views across the Ribble Valley - moorland rolling away in every direction, with Pendle Hill sitting heavy on the horizon.

It's not dramatic fell country. More rolling agricultural landscape with stone walls running across the slopes. You'll pass through farmland on the approach, so stick to the marked routes and shut gates behind you. The actual summit is modest - no trig point theatre, just open hillside and the kind of quiet you don't often find within spitting distance of town.

Walkers will get the most from this one. It's too short for serious hikers looking for a full day out, but perfect if you're based at one of the nearby glamping spots - Hedgerow Luxury Glamping is only 1.5 miles away - and want a morning's fresh air without committing to the Pennine Way. Families with younger kids might find it a bit of a plod; the reward isn't dramatic enough to hold their attention for long.

Go in late afternoon when Clitheroe itself is winding down. The light gets lovely across the valley floor, and you'll likely have the place to yourself. It's free, obviously. Allow an hour return if you're not dawdling, longer if you want to sit and actually look at the view rather than just photograph it.
