Horseshoe Hill

The climb up Horseshoe Hill rewards you with proper views across Hampshire's rolling chalk downland - the sort of landscape that makes you understand why people have lived here for thousands of years. It's not a dramatic peak by any stretch, but the walk itself is pleasant enough, and on a clear day you can see for miles across the Test Valley towards Stockbridge.

You'll get decent views of the surrounding countryside - open downland, scattered woodland, the whole thing. It takes about 45 minutes up and back depending on fitness and how often you stop to catch your breath or take photos.

But if you're after dramatic vistas or rare geological formations, you'll be disappointed. It's a solid local walk, the kind of thing to slot into a morning while staying at one of the nearby parks.

The Meadow Glamping sits just a couple of miles away and makes a sensible base - good reviews too. Salisbury Hillside Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite is equally close. From either, Horseshoe Hill works as a gentle warm-up walk before exploring the wider Test Valley or heading into Stockbridge proper for lunch. Combine it with other local paths rather than treating it as a standalone destination.
