Hoober Hill

The walk up Hoober Hill is a proper leg-burner, but the Ribble Valley spreads out beneath you once you've earned it. This isn't some manicured peak with a cafe at the summit - it's a genuine moorland climb on the edge of Lancashire, with genuine views that make you understand why people live up here. You're looking across patchwork fields towards the Pennines, with Clitheroe's limestone cliffs visible off to one side. Takes about forty minutes up from the car park if you're not dawdling, though the final push gets steep enough to make you question your life choices halfway up.

Families with older kids will manage it fine. Younger ones might find it tedious - it's relentless rather than scenic on the way up, and there's nothing to do once you've got there except admire the view and have a rest. Walkers, though, will find it satisfying. It connects into broader moorland routes if you fancy extending the day, and the exposed ridge at the top catches wind like nothing else. Come early morning or late afternoon when the light's proper golden and you won't have crowds. Winter's surprisingly nice too - clearer visibility, fewer midges.
