Holywood Sea Park / Sea Front

The seafront at Holywood, just outside Belfast, is where locals go to clear their heads - and it's easy to see why. This stretch of coastline doubles as a proper nature reserve, with shingle beaches, salt marshes, and enough bird life to keep twitchers occupied for hours. You'll spot waders, terns, and if you're lucky, the occasional seal poking its head up from the water.

It's a straightforward place, really. Walk the shore, watch the birds, breathe in that Atlantic air. The reserve runs along the water's edge and back into the marshy bits behind, so there's room to roam without feeling hemmed in. Families with young kids might manage an hour or so on the beach itself, though it's not the sort of spot for building sandcastles - the shingle's not ideal for that.

Walkers get the most from it. The paths are free and open year-round, though spring and autumn bring the best migrating birds. An hour or two is enough to do it justice, longer if you've brought binoculars and patience. The reserve sits just beyond Holywood village, making it an easy add-on to a Belfast day trip.

Stay overnight at Dundonald Touring Caravan Park, only four miles away, or splash out on The Pods at Streamvale if you fancy something with more atmosphere. Both work well as a base for exploring the coast, and this reserve beats paying entry fees to somewhere more famous.
