Holy Trinity Parish Church, Bolton-le-Sands and St Mark's Nether Kellet.

Two modest churches separated by a few miles of Lancashire countryside, both worth a quiet detour if you're staying near Carnforth. Holy Trinity in Bolton-le-Sands is the more substantial of the pair - solid Victorian work with decent stained glass and that particular kind of peace you only get inside an English parish church on a weekday afternoon. St Mark's over in Nether Kellet is smaller, older in parts, and has the sort of graveyard that makes you want to spend longer reading headstones than you probably should.

These aren't showstopper attractions. You won't spend hours here, and if you're after grand architecture or famous monuments, you'll be disappointed. But if you're the type who finds something restorative about old churches - the smell of hymn books, the particular light through ancient windows, the quiet - then both deserve an hour of your time. History buffs might appreciate the layers, especially at St Mark's, though interpretation boards are thin on the ground.

Neither charges for entry, which is proper. Allow thirty minutes to an hour at each, longer if you're genuinely interested in the gravestones and local records. They're perfectly pitched between the holiday parks at Wonderland Retreats and Holgates if you're glamping in the area and fancy a break from the site. Go early on a weekday for the best chance of having them to yourself. Sunday mornings will have services on, obviously, so timing matters.
