Holy Island Beach

The causeway appears at low tide like a gift the sea forgot to reclaim. Holy Island Beach is technically on Lindisfarne Island, just off the Northumberland coast near Belford, and it's only accessible when the water drops enough to reveal that pale sandy road. Get the tide times wrong and you're stuck for hours - which sounds dramatic but genuinely happens to visitors who underestimate it.

What you're actually looking at is a proper beach wrapped around an island that's been monastic, Viking-raided, and photographed to death. The ruins of Lindisfarne Priory dominate the rocky bit, but the sand stretches out in wide golden arcs, especially on the eastern side. On a clear day the light hits the stone differently every hour. Walkers love it because the beach itself is calm and deep - good for families with younger kids who won't wander into Atlantic swells. The island also has castle ruins perched on a crag if you want to add a scramble to the trip.

Timing is everything. Check tide tables before you go - seriously, this isn't optional. Most people allow three to four hours max, which is plenty unless you're the type to sit on rocks and contemplate life. It's free to visit, though parking near the causeway is tight in summer. The nearest campsites are Barn at Beal and Budle Farm, both within striking distance, making it an easy day trip from a park holiday in the area. Winter brings moody skies and barely any crowds. Summer gets rammed with school groups. Spring or autumn hits the sweet spot.
