Holme wood

The woodland around Holme Wood near Garstang is proper walking territory - dense enough to feel properly remote, but close enough to civilisation that you won't get lost. The forest floor is thick with moss and leaf litter, with a decent network of paths threading through mature deciduous trees. It's the sort of place where you notice things: a clearing where light floods through, the particular smell after rain, how the canopy changes seasonally.

This is best for people who actually enjoy walking rather than those just looking for an Instagram moment. There's nothing flashy here - no visitor centre, no facilities that I'm aware of, just woodland doing what it does. Families with young kids might manage an hour or so before legs get tired, but serious hikers could easily spend a half-day exploring the different routes. The paths aren't signposted brilliantly, so bring a map or download something on your phone beforehand.

If you're staying at one of the caravan parks nearby - Claylands is closest at just two miles - Holme Wood makes a straightforward morning or afternoon outing. It's the sort of place to slot in between other activities rather than a destination in itself. Go when it's been dry for a few days, as the woodland can get boggy. Winter's actually lovely here if you don't mind mud - fewer people around and the bare trees let you see the structure of the forest properly.
