Holme Hill

The walk up Holme Hill rewards you with proper fell views across the Settle area - nothing dramatic, but solid Yorkshire moorland landscape that justifies the climb. It's the sort of place where you'll spot curlews and get a real sense of the Pennine plateau rather than dramatic peaks.

This one suits walkers who want something achievable without committing to a full day expedition. The ascent from Settle takes maybe an hour or so depending on your pace and which route you choose. You're not scrambling or dealing with exposure - it's straightforward hillwalking on well-trodden paths.

Bring decent boots because moorland can be wet underfoot even when it hasn't rained recently. The summit itself isn't particularly dramatic - no stone cairn or café - but the views back toward Settle and across the limestone country make it worthwhile. Go on a clear day; cloud rolls in fast around here and you'll lose everything.

If you're based at Philpin Farm Campsite, just three miles away, Holme Hill works as a morning excursion before settling in for the afternoon. The Dalesbridge Campsite and Cabins is also within easy reach, making this a natural leg-stretcher from either base.

It's not a must-do if you're short on time - there are more rewarding peaks in the Yorkshire Dales a bit further afield. But if you've got a morning free and you're staying locally, it's a good honest walk that gives you genuine hill country without the tourist crowds.
