Hodgeon Stone Plantation

Walking into Hodgeon Stone Plantation feels like stepping into proper woodland - tall conifers, soft ground underfoot, the kind of place where the light filters through in dappled patches. It's a working forest near Clitheroe, and you'll see evidence of that: timber operations, managed clearings, the occasional forestry track. Nothing fancy, but that's rather the point.

This is walker territory, primarily. There are paths threading through, though they're not always signposted with the enthusiasm you'd get at a more manicured spot. Allow two to three hours if you want a decent circuit, longer if you dawdle. The terrain is gentle enough for reasonably fit families, though younger kids might find the endless trees a bit samey after the first twenty minutes. It's the sort of place you come to breathe, not to be entertained.

Being free and unregulated does mean you need to know what you're doing - proper footwear, a map or offline GPS on your phone, basic common sense about the weather. Go when it's been dry if you can; after rain it becomes genuinely boggy in patches.

Staying at Pendle View Holiday Park just two miles away gives you easy access, or any of the other caravan and glamping sites around Clitheroe put you within striking distance. It works well as a morning walk break during a wider Ribble Valley holiday, though I wouldn't build a day entirely around it unless you're seriously into forest bathing. Real woodland types will rate it. Casual visitors? You might find it a touch underwhelming.
