Historic waterfall path

The path down to the waterfall is steep enough to test your calves but worth every gasp for breath. You're in proper Highland terrain here - Sutherland way - where the landscape doesn't do gentle. The walk takes you through moorland and past rock formations that feel genuinely remote, even though you're only a short drive from civilization.

The waterfall itself crashes down with real force, especially after rain. Stand at the base and you'll feel the spray on your face and understand why the Victorians got excited about these places. The whole experience takes around an hour return, depending on fitness and how long you want to linger at the bottom.

It's excellent for keen walkers who want something with actual grit to it - not a stroll. Young kids might struggle with the gradient unless they're used to hiking. Families with older children will find it manageable and genuinely memorable.

If you're based at Clachtoll Beach Campsite just down the way, this makes a solid half-day venture when the weather's playing ball. Waterfall walks in Scotland are temperamental though - come on a grey day and the drama's muted. Wait for weak sunshine breaking through cloud and you've got something special. There's no facilities at the trailhead, so bring water.
