Hill of Fingray

The walk up Hill of Fingray takes you through proper Highland terrain - moorland that shifts from boggy to bracken-covered depending on the season. It's not a slog, but it's not a gentle afternoon stroll either. From Banchory, you're looking at a decent drive inland before you even lace your boots.

What you get at the top is the real thing: panoramic views across Aberdeenshire that stretch towards the Cairngorms on a clear day. The hill itself sits around 580 metres, which means you earn the views without needing mountaineering experience. Walkers will appreciate the route - it's accessible enough for most fitness levels but demanding enough to feel like an actual achievement.

Bring a map and a compass. Mobile signal can be patchy, and the weather turns quickly up here. In summer, midges can be relentless, so timing your visit for windier days pays off. The walk takes a couple of hours there and back depending on your pace and how long you linger on top.
