Tipperweir

The walk up Tipperweir rewards you with proper Highland views - nothing flashy, just honest scenery that stretches across Aberdeenshire. It's a moderate hill rather than a serious peak, which means families with older kids and regular walkers get the most from it without needing a dawn start or technical kit.

From the top you're looking out over the Dee Valley and the surrounding moorland. The approach takes you through forest first, then opens up as you climb higher. Allow a couple of hours there and back depending on your fitness - it's not a quick lap. The weather can turn fast up there, so waterproofs aren't optional even if the forecast looks decent.

Banchory sits just a few miles away, which makes Tipperweir a natural addition to a longer day out in the area. If you're based at one of the caravan parks nearby - Glen Dye Cabins are closest at just over 2 miles - this works well as a morning outing before heading into town for lunch. Banchory Lodge further out is the most highly rated locally if you're looking for a proper base.

It's free to climb, obviously. No visitor centre, no café at the summit, no faffing about. Just take what you need. The path can get boggy in wet weather, and in winter you'll want hillwalking experience. Spring through early autumn is your window - clear views, firmer ground. Go early to avoid the crowds, though it's never rammed up there.
