Mount Shade

The walk up Mount Shade from Banchory takes you into proper Highland terrain without needing a full day's expedition. It's a straightforward ascent through moorland and heather, nothing technical, but the views across Deeside make it worthwhile - on a clear day you can see right across to the Cairngorms. Most people manage it in two to three hours round trip, which suits families with older kids and anyone after a decent leg-stretch without the full mountain commitment.

This isn't a dramatic peak. The summit itself is moorland rather than dramatic rock, but that's partly what makes it good - you get genuine Highland landscape without the crowds you'd find on Ben Nevis or similar. The path is well-trodden, occasionally boggy in patches, and you'll want proper walking boots. Go early in the day if you can. The light's better and you'll likely have the place to yourself.

It pairs well with a park holiday in the area. Glen Dye Cabins and Cottages sits just 1.7 miles away - close enough that you could do the walk and be back for a late breakfast. Feughside Caravan Park at 3.5 miles gives you the same easy access. Both are solid bases for exploring the Deeside valley more broadly. Banchory itself has shops and tea rooms if you need to refuel afterwards.

Who gets the most from it? Walkers after a solid morning hike, history types interested in the old drove routes through Glen Dye, and families wanting to feel like they've done a proper hill walk without the technical difficulty. Not a tick-box peak, but a genuine Aberdeenshire outing that delivers what you're after.
