Highland Glass

Highland Glass sits just outside Oban, a working glass studio where you can actually watch artisans crafting and blowing glass in real time. It's the sort of place that sounds a bit niche until you walk in and get properly hypnotised by someone shaping molten glass at 1100 degrees. The studio sells finished pieces - jewellery, vases, small sculptures - most of it made on-site, which means you're not buying mass-produced tat.

Truth is, this appeals more to adults than kids, unless your children have the patience to stand still for ten minutes. Art enthusiasts and anyone who appreciates craft will find it worthwhile. You're looking at perhaps 20-30 minutes if you're just browsing, longer if you chat to the makers about their process. It's free to watch, though obviously they'd like you to buy something.

Timing-wise, visit midweek if possible - weekends draw the coach tour crowd. The light's best in late morning when you can actually see what the artists are doing without glare off the furnaces.

If you're staying at one of the nearby parks - Tanunda Pods and Maggie's Cabin are closest at under two miles - it makes sense as a quick detour while exploring Oban itself. The town has everything else: proper seafood restaurants, the distillery, Dunollie Castle if you want something with more historical weight. Highland Glass works best as part of a broader Oban afternoon rather than a destination in itself, but if you care about how things are made, it's worth the stop.
