Higher Dean wood

The trees here are mixed and mature, with paths that wind through beech and oak, opening occasionally onto views across the Ribble Valley. It's free to access and works brilliantly as a half-day outing, particularly if you're based at one of the nearby holiday parks like Wigwam Holidays Ribble Valley or Pendle View just down the road.

The main draw is straightforward walking. There's nothing fancy about it - no visitor centre, no sculptures, just woodland. Some paths are well-trodden and clear, others less so, which means you can make it as easy or as challenging as you fancy. A couple of hours will get you round the main trails comfortably; families with younger kids should allow an extra thirty minutes for stops and slower pace. The forest isn't dramatically steep, though it's rolling enough to feel like proper exercise.

Who'll enjoy it most? Walkers definitely, and anyone after a break from the holiday park routine. Families won't find it a destination in itself - kids get bored once the novelty of trees wears off after an hour - but it's an excellent addition to a Clitheroe weekend. History enthusiasts should note this area has Pendle Hill close by for those interested in the witch trials, though that's a separate venture. Best visited outside peak weekends when you'll actually hear birdsong rather than other people.
