High Stile Wood

The walk up through High Stile Wood, just outside Keswick, is one of those routes that rewards you without demanding much in return. You're climbing through proper Lake District fell woodland - oak, birch, and rowan - with the canopy opening up just often enough to remind you what's waiting at the top. The forest floor is soft underfoot, especially after rain, and the path itself is reasonably well-trodden without being overcrowded. Most people tackling this are heading for High Stile itself, the 806-metre fell that crowns the ridge, but the wood is the best bit of the whole experience. The views start coming through once you're above the trees, and you can see right across to Crummock Water and Buttermere beyond.

It's a solid half-day walk from Keswick, taking maybe two to three hours depending on your pace and how long you linger. Families with older kids will manage it fine; the path climbs steadily rather than brutally. Walkers who want something more substantial than a stroll but aren't ready for a full fell expedition should mark this down. The wood itself is free to access - park sensibly near the start and go when the weather's decent, as the path gets boggy in wet spells.

If you're camping at Great Langdale or Castlerigg Hall, both within striking distance, this makes an excellent half-day venture. The nearby Catbells walk gets all the attention, but High Stile Wood offers better shelter and a gentler introduction to the fells. Worth doing.
