High Saddle

The walk up High Saddle from Great Langdale is one of those climbs that looks modest on the map until you're actually doing it. You're not talking a leisurely stroll - this is proper fell walking territory, and it rewards you with one of the best views across the central Lake District fells.

From Ambleside, it's a straightforward drive into Great Langdale, where most walkers start from the car park at the valley head. The route itself takes around two to three hours depending on fitness and how often you stop to catch your breath. The ascent is relentless in places, but nothing technical - just steep grass and rock underfoot. Weather can turn quickly up here, so check conditions before you go.

Once you're up there, the panorama opens out properly. Pike O'Stickle dominates to the north, and on a clear day the view south across Windermere and beyond justifies every step. Fell walkers will find this essential; families with younger kids might struggle with the gradient, though teenagers who enjoy a proper challenge would get a real kick from it.

If you're camped at Great Langdale Campsite or the glamping spots nearby, this becomes an obvious day's objective. It's also doable as a half-day from BaysBrown Farm or even Castlerigg Hall if you're willing to drive over. The fell itself is free - no entry fees or facilities up top, just the fells as they are. Bring water. Bring a map. Go early to dodge the crowds.
