National Trust - The Langdales

The Langdales are proper fell country - two valleys that cut deep into the Lake District fells between Ambleside and the high peaks beyond. It's National Trust land, which means you're walking across managed moorland and forest that's been carefully stewarded, though it never feels manicured or fussy.

The valley splits into Great Langdale and Little Langdale, each with its own character. Great Langdale is the more dramatic of the two, ringed by serious peaks including Bowfell and Langdale Pikes - those craggy summits you'll recognise from postcards. The valley floor itself is gentler though, with a beck running through meadows and woodland that shift through the seasons. Little Langdale is quieter, more intimate, with a tarn that catches the light beautifully on clear days.

Walkers will have the time of their lives here. Routes range from gentle riverside strolls to serious fell scrambles that'll take the best part of a day. Even a modest two-hour loop reveals how the landscape changes - you'll move from pasture through ancient woodland into open moorland where the views spread for miles.

It's free to access, and you can park at the valley head near Great Langdale Campsite or venture further in. Allow at least half a day if you want to do it properly; more if you're tackling any of the peaks. Go when the weather's set fair - mist rolls in quickly here and spoils the views you've come for.
