High Pennard Hill Fort

High Pennard Hill Fort might not look like much to the untrained eye - grassy ramparts and ditches are all that remain - but history buffs will appreciate the strategic brilliance of this clifftop stronghold.

The fort sits on a natural promontory, with steep cliffs providing natural defences on two sides. Walking the perimeter, you can still make out the defensive earthworks that once protected around 200 people. It's free to explore, though there's no signage to speak of, so bring your imagination.

Families based at nearby Three Cliffs Bay Holiday Park will find it an easy add-on to beach trips below. The walk up from the bay takes about 20 minutes and offers cracking views across the Gower Peninsula. Kids might lose interest quickly though - there's not much to see beyond grassy bumps and ridges.

Serious walkers should combine it with the coastal path, while archaeology enthusiasts will want to factor in an hour to properly explore the site. The views alone make it worth the climb, stretching from Oxwich Bay to the Mumbles near Swansea.
