High Fields

Standing at 375 metres, this modest summit offers surprisingly good views across the White Peak without the crowds that swarm Kinder Scout or Bleaklow. The walk up from Bakewell takes about 45 minutes through typical Derbyshire drystone wall country - nothing too taxing, though it's a steady climb that'll get the heart pumping.

Families with older children will enjoy the sense of achievement, though toddlers might find it a bit much. The real reward comes at the top where you can see across to Chatsworth's parkland and the limestone dales that make this corner of Derbyshire so special. On a clear day, you'll spot the distinctive shape of Mam Tor in the distance.

It's free to roam, obviously, and you can visit year-round though winter can be properly muddy. Allow half a day if you're combining it with a poke around Bakewell's shops and that famous pudding.
