About Longstone Moor
Walkers will appreciate the relatively gentle ascent compared to some of the Peak's more punishing peaks. The moorland terrain underfoot is typical Derbyshire - springy grass with the odd boggy patch after rain. On clear days, you can make out the distinctive outline of Kinder Scout on the horizon.
Families with older children who don't mind a proper walk will enjoy this one, though it's not particularly exciting for little ones expecting dramatic crags or waterfalls. The summit itself is fairly modest - no trig point or grand rocky outcrop, just that satisfying feeling of being properly up high.
Allow a couple of hours for the round trip from wherever you park up. Early morning or late afternoon light shows off the limestone walls and field patterns at their best. It's free walking, naturally, though you'll want decent boots if it's been wet.
Staying at one of the nearby holiday parks makes this an easy addition to a Peak District break. Dale Farm Rural Campsite and Greenhills Holiday Park are both within striking distance, giving you a proper base for exploring this gentler side of the Peaks.
