Fin Cop

The walk up Fin Cop from Bakewell is steep, relentless, and absolutely worth the grind. You're climbing a limestone peak that sits on the edge of the White Peak, and once you crest it, the views across the Derbyshire dales spread out properly in every direction. On a clear day you can pick out Mam Tor and other high ground to the west, while the fields ripple away toward Bakewell itself below.

It's a short ascent - maybe twenty minutes of proper effort from the car park - which makes it ideal for families who don't want a full day commitment but fancy getting their kids to a genuine summit. The path is straightforward, if a bit boggy in places after rain. Walkers will appreciate the quick payoff and the fact it ties neatly into a broader Derbyshire hills itinerary without eating up half your day.

The peak itself isn't dramatic - no craggy outcrops or Alpine theatrics - but there's something quietly satisfying about the 350-metre elevation gain and the expansive vista you get for your effort. Bring a packed lunch and linger a bit; the wind up here can be bracing, especially in winter.

If you're based at one of the local campsites - Dale Farm is barely a mile and a half away, or Greenhills just two miles off - you could knock this out before breakfast and still have the afternoon free for Chatsworth Park or a wander down into Bakewell itself. It's the sort of walk that doesn't announce itself as special, but locals return to it regularly. That should tell you something.
