High Cross

Standing proud on what feels like the top of the world, this ancient stone cross marks one of the highest points in Shropshire. The medieval monument itself is fairly modest - a weathered stone shaft topped with a simple cross - but it's the location that makes this worth seeking out.

From up here, you get proper sweeping views across the Welsh borders and deep into the Shropshire countryside. On a clear day, you can make out the Wrekin to the east and the Welsh hills rolling away to the west. It's the sort of spot where you'll want to linger with a flask of tea, especially if you're staying at one of the nearby parks like Oxon Hall or Love2Stay.

History buffs will appreciate that crosses like this once marked important routes and parish boundaries, though the exact age of this one remains something of a mystery. Walkers and photographers get the most from a visit here - families with young children might find it's more of a quick photo stop than a destination in itself.

The walk up from Shrewsbury takes about an hour each way, though you can drive much closer if you know the lanes. Best visited on a crisp winter's day when the views stretch for miles, rather than summer when haze can disappoint.
