Higger Tor

The gritstone outcrop of Higger Tor rises abruptly from the moorland above the Hope Valley, offering one of the quickest payoffs for effort in the Peak District. The walk from Grindleford or Froggatt is short and steep - twenty minutes up, mostly - but once you're there, the views across to Millstone Edge and down into the valley below are genuinely impressive.

It's a proper walker's spot rather than a sight-seer's destination. There's no tearoom, no visitor centre, just exposed rock, heather, and the kind of wind that'll steal your breath. The tor itself has a few scrambling sections that kids find exciting, though younger ones might find the approach a bit grinding. History types will appreciate the Bronze Age burial cairn visible on the summit - easy to miss if you don't know where to look.

Allow an hour and a half including the walk and time at the top to actually sit down. Best done early or late in the day to avoid the crowds. The moorland can be wet even when it hasn't rained recently, so proper boots are essential.

For a camping holiday, this sits perfectly in the middle of the Hope Valley cluster. North Lees Campsite is closest at under two miles, making it an ideal evening walk if you want to time sunset from the summit. Wyming Brook Farm and Fox Hagg Farm are also within striking distance. It's the sort of place that rewards getting up early before the car parks fill up.
