Hidden Pot

The entrance is easy to miss if you're not looking properly - a modest hole in the limestone hillside near Carnforth that barely hints at what's waiting inside. Hidden Pot is a proper cave system worth seeking out if you're into that sort of thing, with passages that require a bit of scrambling and squeezing through tight spots. The formations aren't as jaw-dropping as some of the show caves down south, but there's something satisfying about discovering it yourself rather than following crowds through a commercial operation.

You'll need decent torches, sturdy boots, and a head for tight spaces. It's free to explore, though the local caving club keeps tabs on things, so best check in before you go. Allow a couple of hours if you're taking it slow and enjoying the limestone features. Kids aged ten and up who aren't claustrophobic will probably get a kick out of it; younger ones might find the squeeze sections more stressful than fun.

The real appeal here is combining it with walking in the surrounding countryside. If you're staying at Primrose Glamping Pods or Philpin Farm Campsite nearby, this makes a brilliant half-day adventure. It's not a major draw on its own - you wouldn't travel hours for it - but if you're already in North Yorkshire exploring limestone pavements and cave systems, Hidden Pot definitely warrants the detour. Go in autumn when water levels are lower and the cave is less likely to flood.
