Hexham Abbey

The moment you walk into Hexham Abbey, you're confronted with a thousand years of stone and prayer. This isn't some minor parish church - it's a proper Anglo-Saxon foundation that's been standing since 674, rebuilt in grander form by the Normans, and it shows. The nave soars above you, all ribbed vaults and sturdy pillars, while light pours through windows that manage to be both ancient and oddly contemporary.

What strikes you most is the sheer solidity of the thing. The crypt beneath the main church is one of only a handful of surviving Saxon crypts in England, and standing down there in the cool quiet feels legitimately special - you're literally walking through architecture from the 7th century. The choir stalls are carved oak, intricate and worn by centuries of elbows and fidgeting priests. There's a proper sense of weight to the history here, not the manufactured sort.

It works brilliantly as a breather on a park holiday - Springhouse Boutique is just five miles away, making it an easy morning jaunt into Hexham town itself. The abbey sits right in the centre, so you can pair it with the town's decent market square and cafes. History enthusiasts will spend a good hour inside. Families with young kids might find it a bit solemn after twenty minutes, unless they're genuinely keen on medieval architecture.

Admission is free, though there's an honesty box for donations. Worth allowing an hour if you want to really look around, rather than just a quick once-over.
