Hethpool Wood

Walk into Hethpool Wood and the noise of the world drops away fast. This is serious Northumberland forest - tall conifers mixed with native broadleaves, proper woodland rather than a manicured park stroll. The trees close in around you properly, which some people find lovely and others find a bit claustrophobic depending on the weather.

It's the sort of place where walkers actually want to spend time, not just tick off. You've got proper trails threading through, decent elevation changes if you fancy pushing yourself, and the kind of quiet that makes you remember why you drove out to the back end of Northumberland in the first place. The light filtering through the canopy gets ethereal on clear days, though it can feel rather grey and damp when the clouds sit low.

Wooler is your nearest town - about twenty minutes away - which means Hethpool sits properly rural. Highburn House Caravan Park is close by if you're basing yourself in the area, and frankly, if you're staying there, this wood is worth the short hop for a half-day ramble.

Give it two to three hours for a decent circuit. Families with young legs will manage fine, though it's not a destination you'd plan around if your children need waymarked, sanitised paths every five minutes. Free to visit, naturally - it's woodland. Best visited spring through autumn unless you're the sort who actually enjoys trudging through mud up to your calves.
