Hellifield Haw

The walk up Hellifield Haw is proper steep - no messing about. You're looking at a genuine fell hike from near Clitheroe, and the climb demands real legs, not a gentle stroll. The reward, though, is the kind of view that makes you forget your burning calves: moorland rolling out in all directions, the Ribble Valley spreading below, and on a clear day, you can pick out the bigger peaks dotting the horizon. It takes the best part of two hours there and back if you're moving at a reasonable pace, and you'll want proper walking boots rather than trainers.

This isn't a place for families with small kids or anyone after a quick photo opportunity. It's for walkers who actually want to walk, who enjoy being alone on the fells without the crowds you'd find on the more famous peaks. Bring water. The moorland can feel exposed and bare, which is exactly why it's worth doing.

It slots nicely into a weekend of proper walking around the Ribble Valley - you could easily pair it with routes from Thornton Hall Country Park or push further into the higher ground. The whole area is made for it. Go midweek if you can. The weather up there changes fast, so check conditions before you head out.
