Hellifield Brow

The walk up Hellifield Brow takes you through proper Lancashire moorland, rising above the patchwork fields around Clitheroe. It's not a dramatic scramble - more a steady climb through farmland and open country that rewards you with wide views across the Ribble Valley when you reach the top. The summit itself is fairly modest, nothing dramatic, but on a clear day you can see what feels like half of Lancashire spreading out below you.

This is walker territory, pure and simple. It's the kind of hill you'd tackle as part of a longer route through the Forest of Bowland rather than an isolated trip. Most people allow an hour or so for the ascent and descent, depending on fitness and how often you stop to look around. Families with younger kids might find it a bit of a slog without a proper payoff at the summit - no café, no cafe, no tower - just moorland and views. Serious walkers and fell runners will barely notice it.

What makes it work is how it slots into the wider walking landscape around here. If you're staying at one of the glamping spots in the area - Malham Glamping Pods or Peaks and Pods are both within five miles - it's an easy afternoon outing before heading back for dinner. There's something satisfying about the no-frills approach: no visitor centre, no business, just a hill that gets walked because it's there and the views are decent. Go in decent weather, though. In mist, it's just wet moorland, which loses its charm quickly.
