Heights of Craigencrow

The walk up Heights of Craigencrow isn't long, but it packs a proper punch. You're looking at views across Fife that stretch for miles on a clear day - the kind where you can see right across to the Forth. It's not a dramatic peak by Scottish standards, more of a steady climb through decent woodland, and you'll be up and back within an hour or so from the parking area near Kinross.

This one's brilliant for families who want a proper walk without the full mountaineering commitment. Kids can manage it without too much whinging, and there's a real sense of achievement at the top. History buffs might be interested in the old fortifications scattered about - though the signage could be better, to be honest. The views are the main event though. On a dull day it's a bit forgettable, but catch it right and you'll understand why people make the trip.

If you're staying at one of the nearby parks - Meadow View Glamping is particularly good, just under four miles away - this makes an easy morning outing before heading elsewhere. Fossoway Cabins is also close by if you want something quieter. The walk itself is free, and you can do it year-round, though autumn is proper lovely up there. Allow a couple of hours if you're stopping for the views and a snack at the top.
