Hednesford Park

The old mining landscape around Rugeley has been transformed into something genuinely worth exploring. Hednesford Park sits on what was once industrial wasteland - clay pits and spoil heaps left behind when the collieries shut down. What's emerged is a proper nature reserve with real character, the sort of place where you notice how quickly nature reclaims things if you give it half a chance.

Walking the trails here, you're moving through recovering woodland and grassland with surprisingly good birdwatching opportunities. The wetland areas attract waders and waterfowl, and on a quiet morning you might spot roe deer. It's not dramatic scenery - no dramatic hills or mountain views - but there's something quite moving about a landscape in transition. Kids will find enough to keep them engaged for a couple of hours: water features to explore, woodland to investigate, the occasional surprise spotting. Serious walkers might find it a bit tame compared to what Cannock Chase proper offers just nearby, but it serves a different purpose.

The park makes a solid addition to a wider Cannock Chase visit. Those staying at Cannock Chase Camping & Caravanning Club Site (2.5 miles away) or Chase Camping at Tackeroo (2.4 miles) could easily slot this in as a morning or afternoon walk without much faffing about with travel time. It's free to explore and accessible pretty much year-round, though winter reveals the landscape more clearly without the summer scrub. Allow 90 minutes to two hours for a proper wander without rushing.
