Cannock Chase National Landscape

Cannock Chase is one of those landscapes that sneaks up on you. You're driving through the Midlands, expecting post-industrial sprawl, and suddenly the terrain opens up - heathland, woodland, and views that stretch across Staffordshire in ways you wouldn't expect this far from the Peak District.

It's a designated National Landscape, which basically means it's proper countryside worth protecting. The area rolls across about 68 square miles of mixed habitat - heathland restoration work sits alongside mature forests, and there are more than enough tracks and paths to keep walkers occupied for days. Mountain bikers treat it like their personal playground, and they're not wrong to.

Walkers will get the most from this. There's real variety in the terrain, from gentle circuits near Rugeley to proper woodland rambles that'll have you genuinely lost if you're not paying attention. The heathland sections are particularly good in late summer when the heather's flowering. Kids can manage shorter loops easily enough, though the novelty does wear off after an hour or so unless you're specifically into spotting wildlife.

The whole thing is free to access - you're just walking through open country. Allow whatever time suits you, really. An afternoon gets you a decent taste. An entire day means you can explore multiple sections properly.
