CANNOCK CHASE GERMAN MILITARY CEMETERY

The German Military Cemetery sits quietly on Cannock Chase, a few miles from Rugeley, and it's one of those places that stops you in your tracks. Over 5,000 German soldiers are buried here - mostly casualties from the First World War, with some from the Second. Walking through the rows of simple dark headstones feels properly solemn. There's a real weight to it.

It's maintained immaculately by the German War Graves Commission, and you can visit free of charge. The site itself is modest and understated, which somehow makes it more moving than something grander would be. You'll spend 20 minutes to half an hour here, depending on how long you want to stand and think. History types and anyone interested in the First World War will find it genuinely affecting. Families with older children can handle it fine, though younger kids might not grasp why it matters.

Cannock Chase itself is brilliant for a holiday break - there are walking trails crisscrossing the heathland, and the camping options nearby (Chase Camping at Tackeroo and Cannock Chase Camping & Caravanning Club Site are both close) make it easy to base yourself here. The cemetery visit slots perfectly between woodland walks. Go midweek if you can. The place asks something of you - respect, attention - and it deserves both. It's not cheerful, but it's absolutely worth the trip if you're in the area.
