Hednesford Hills Local Nature Reserve

Sand and heather dominate this 75-hectare reserve just outside Rugeley, the result of old industrial workings that nature has since reclaimed rather effectively. What you get is something between a proper nature reserve and a landscape that's still visibly healing - birch scrub, open heath, and the kind of views across Staffordshire that make you forget you're in the West Midlands at all.

It's walkers who'll get the most from Hednesford Hills. The terrain is gently undulating rather than demanding, and there are several interconnected paths threading through different habitats. Birdwatchers come here regularly - you might spot woodlarks or European nightjars depending on the season. The heathland itself supports rare plants and insects, so spring through early autumn is genuinely worth timing your visit around.

Free to access, and you can spend anything from 45 minutes for a quick loop to two hours if you're thorough. There's no visitor centre or facilities, so come prepared. The nearby camping options at Chase Camping at Tackeroo and Four Oaks Farm put you within easy striking distance if you're basing yourself in the area for a few days.

Honestly, it's not a must-do destination by itself. But if you're already camping locally and want a proper walk away from the caravan, it delivers. The light on the heath in late afternoon is rather lovely, and you'll likely have the place mostly to yourself on a weekday.
