Hebers Ghyll Waterfall

The waterfall at Hebers Ghyll is a proper Yorkshire surprise - a 30-foot drop tucked into a wooded ravine just outside Ilkley that feels genuinely remote despite being minutes from town. Water tumbles over dark stone into a small plunge pool below, and in winter when the beck's running high it's genuinely impressive. The walk there is half the charm: a mile or so from the car park takes you through mixed woodland with the sound of the stream getting louder as you descend. It's free to visit and there's no real time limit, though most people spend 20 minutes photographing the falls and poking about the rocks before heading back up.

This one's made for families who've hired a static at Olicana Park or Brown Bank - close enough for a half-day outing without feeling like a proper expedition. Older kids who can manage a steep path will get a kick out of scrambling near the water; younger ones might find the climb back up tedious. If the weather's been dry the falls are underwhelming, so aim for autumn or winter when the becks are flowing. History buffs won't find much to chew on, but walkers and photographers will get decent shots in spring when the trees start greening.

Worth the short drive from Ilkley? Absolutely, especially if you're based nearby at Draughton Heights or Catgill Farm. Don't expect Niagara - expect a nice bit of moorland drama that takes an hour out of your day and costs nothing.
