Hayfield Hill

The path isn't technical enough to warrant specialist gear, but do check the weather before heading out - moorland has a habit of closing in quickly. The descent matters as much as the climb, so give yourself enough daylight to pick your way down safely.

Walkers will get the most from this, particularly those who prefer open moorland to woodland. If you're travelling with young children, be honest with yourself about stamina - it's genuinely exposed once you gain height, and there's no shelter or facilities on the fell itself. As for best timing, spring and early autumn offer the clearest views. Winter brings snow and poor visibility surprisingly often, even when the lowlands look fine.
