Hawk Lake

The water at Hawk Lake sits surprisingly still most mornings, reflecting the Shropshire sky like dark glass. It's a modest affair - nothing dramatic, nothing that'll make you gasp - but there's something oddly restful about it. You can walk the perimeter, which takes the best part of an hour depending on your pace, and the paths are generally well-maintained though muddy after rain.

Fishermen come here regularly, which tells you the lake has decent stock. The water's cold and clear enough that you might spot pike if you're lucky. Bird watchers should bring binoculars - cormorants and herons use it, plus the usual ducks and geese. Kids won't be endlessly entertained, to be honest. An hour's worth of poking about suits most families, unless yours are genuinely keen on nature spotting.

It's positioned right next to Hawk Lake Caravan Park, which makes it convenient if you're staying locally - no faffing about with a drive. The wider Shropshire parks scene means you could string a few days together visiting other water features and walking routes around Shrewsbury without too much driving. Lower Lacon and Abbey Green Farm are both within easy reach if you fancy variety.

Best visited outside school holidays when it's quieter. The spot works as part of a broader Shropshire break rather than a destination in itself. Free access, obviously, and no facilities to speak of, so come prepared. On a decent day it's exactly what you need - low-key, peaceful, proper outdoors without the crowds.
