Harridge

The walk up Harridge from Greenfield is one of those Lancashire moorland climbs that sneaks up on you. Not particularly high at 340 metres, but the views across the South Pennines pay for the effort once you're up there. The summit itself is bare moorland - don't expect a shelter or a cafe, just open gritstone plateau and the kind of wind that'll proper test your waterproof.

Getting to the top takes roughly 90 minutes from the valley floor if you're moving at a reasonable pace. The path is well-trodden enough not to cause navigation headaches, though it can get boggy in places after rain. Walkers who like a decent leg-stretcher without committing to a full day's expedition will find this hits the sweet spot. History buffs might be less engaged - there's no ruins or earthworks to examine, just geology and views.

Families with older kids who are past the "are we there yet" stage could manage it, though the return journey is relentless and young legs do wear thin. Spring through autumn is the obvious choice, when the ground dries out and the light stays long.

If you're based at Dovestone Holiday Park just down the valley, this makes a cracking morning or afternoon outing. Combine it with the easier walks around Dovestone Reservoir for a proper moorland day. The real appeal here is the walking itself rather than any specific feature - just you, the Pennines, and air that tastes of heather.
