Gwaith Powdwr North Wales Wildlife Trust Nature Reserve

The old powder works at Gwaith Powdwr sit tucked into the Gwynedd countryside near Talsarnau, now managed as a nature reserve by the North Wales Wildlife Trust. What you're walking through is essentially industrial archaeology wrapped up in woodland - the bones of a Victorian gunpowder factory slowly being reclaimed by native plants and wildlife. You'll spot the remains of stone buildings, old workings, and the evidence of machinery long since stripped away, all threaded through by paths that wind between birch and hazel.

It's a proper spot for anyone interested in industrial heritage or keen on spotting birds and woodland creatures. The walk itself isn't demanding - you can cover the main parts in an hour or so - but it rewards lingering. Look up and you'll clock buzzards; look down and you might catch glimpses of roe deer. The beauty of it is that most visitors completely miss the place, so you'll have the paths largely to yourself even on decent weekends.

If you're staying at one of the nearby caravan parks - Barcdy is virtually on your doorstep, barely a mile away - it's an excellent morning or afternoon excursion before heading to the coast at Barmouth or exploring Snowdonia proper. Admission appears to be free, which is just as well given the reserve's quiet, understated approach. There's no visitor centre or cafe, so bring what you need. Best visited in spring or early summer when the woodland's alive but before the worst of the midges arrive.
