Groes Y Forwyn

The walk up Groes Y Forwyn rewards you with proper views across the Powys moorlands - nothing fancy, just good honest walking country. From Llanfyllin, you're looking at a straightforward hike to this peak, and the climb itself is the whole point. The landscape here is all rolling hills and open moorland, the kind of place where you can actually see where you're going rather than trudging through woodland the whole way.

It's not a destination for people wanting to tick off a famous viewpoint or grab an Instagram shot. This is proper fell walking territory, best suited to anyone who actually enjoys being outside for a few hours without expecting crowds or facilities. Families with decent walkers will get on fine; younger kids might find the moorland a bit monotonous, truth be told. The terrain itself is fairly accessible - no rock scrambling required - though you'll want proper boots given the ground underfoot.

Allow yourself three to four hours for a solid walk from Llanfyllin. Spring and autumn work best when the weather's less temperamental, though the wind up here can turn even a clear day fresh. There's no visitor infrastructure, so pack water and whatever snacks you'll need.

If you're camping nearby - Cae Nant Glamping and Camp Plas are both excellent options within a few miles - this makes an ideal morning or afternoon outing. You get proper walking without the tourist infrastructure, and the Llanfyllin area has enough good pubs and local spots to round out the day. It's well worth the detour if you're the sort who prefers moorland to mountains.
